The article starts off with an Amiri Baraka & Larry Neal anti-black-abstraction position, in which they labeled art they couldn't understand, quoted as abstract as useless for blacks. Besides the fact that this position is some white people shit in itself, the same thing can be posed to both of their music.
Niggas always saying "wtf is this nigga talking abt", "nigga offbeat".... they make ABSTRACT hip-hop music that alot of niggas do not understand...
So....
And then at that lets look at all that "black art movement" bs.... now those shits is t-shirts, Big L murals in "so-ha", graffiti in bushwick, biggie murals precede the privitization of the projects.
Its not a secret that street art in itself, a big product of the "black arts movement" is indicative of government and real estate preparation for gentrification and displacement of black and brown people in our neighborhoods.
So what did most this representational black art do to stop that?? Are niggas up in arms?? It got co-opted. Consumed by capitalism. I've never seen a street mural make me feel or inspire me like Mary Lovelace OβNeal's γRunning with My Black Panthers and White Doves a.k.a. Running with My Daemonsγca. 1989β90.
Emory Douglas's work is beautiful but it doesn't FEEL like that .
Why is traditional art legibility liberation?
Jazz wasn't/isn't legible .
Black expression itself exceeds the limits of representation .
